Where the money went

The single biggest federal contract transaction on October 7 was the $900.5M delivery order to TriWest Healthcare Alliance Corp from the Department of Veterans Affairs. The order, identified in USAspending as 36C10G27K0004 under the parent contract 36C10G19D0038, carries the description "EXPRESS REPORT: FY26 SEPTEMBER". TriWest administers part of the VA's Community Care Network, through which eligible veterans receive care from community providers outside VA facilities.

The TriWest order is more than 85 times the size of the next-largest contract transaction in the window, a $10.5M order to Crane and Co., Inc. from the Department of the Treasury, followed by an $8.9M Health and Human Services task order to CAS FSE JV II and an $8.8M General Services Administration order to Ernst and Young. In the top 15 contract transactions of the two days, everything outside the TriWest order combined totals roughly $75M, less than one-tenth of it.

These figures come from the USAspending.gov API for contract award types A, B, C, and D, ranked by transaction amount for actions dated October 7 and 8, 2026.

The daily cash picture

The national debt on October 7 stood at $40.28T, an increase of $11.0B from October 6. That is a smaller one-day move than the $23.9B increase recorded the day before and well below the $50B to $89B single-day moves seen over the past six weeks.

Debt per resident, dividing the total by the Census population figure of 342,875,301, comes to $117,489. Over the 63 days ending October 7, the debt grew by $454.4B, an average pace of about $7.2B per day.

The Daily Treasury Statement for October 7 showed $19.4B in deposits against $19.0B in withdrawals, a net inflow of $369M to the government's operating cash. The operating cash statement and the debt total track different things: the statement measures cash flowing through Treasury accounts on a given day, while the debt total reflects securities issued over time.
