Department Deep Dive: The Treasury Department spent $70.0 million on contracts in one week, much of it on coin metal and currency paper

USAspending records for October 2 to 8, 2026 show $70,024,106.05 in Department of the Treasury contract obligations across 77 transactions, led by United States Mint orders for base metal strip and coil.

Key takeaways

  • The Department of the Treasury recorded $70,024,106.05 in contract obligations across 77 transactions with action dates from October 2 to 8, 2026.
  • The two largest actions were United States Mint delivery orders: $17,876,251.20 to WIELAND ROLLED PRODUCTS NORTH AMERICA, LLC and $14,728,410.00 to PMX INDUSTRIES, INC., both for base metal used in coin production, dated October 6.
  • The Bureau of Engraving and Printing placed two currency paper orders with CRANE & CO., INC. on October 7 totaling $19,248,590.40, for December 2026 deliveries.

A department with two very different jobs

The Department of the Treasury is the department that issues the national debt, collects federal revenue, and runs the Treasury General Account that the Daily Treasury Statement reports on. It is also a buying organization in its own right. Its bureaus purchase the physical inputs of the money supply itself: metal strip and coil for coins at the United States Mint, and security paper for currency at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

The October 2 to 8 records show that second job clearly. The Mint delivery order to WIELAND ROLLED PRODUCTS NORTH AMERICA, LLC, award 2031JG27F70148, is described as base metal strip and freight. The Mint order to PMX INDUSTRIES, INC., award 2031JG27F71130, is described as base metal coil and freight for base metal strip. Together the two orders total $32,604,661.20, about 47 percent of the department total for the week. A third Mint action, a $5,000,000 delivery order to PRIORITY FULFILLMENT SERVICES, INC. on October 7, funds a USPS trust account used in Mint product fulfillment.

At the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the two CRANE & CO., INC. delivery orders, $10,479,176.00 and $8,769,414.40, are both described as currency paper for December 2026 deliveries, one for the Western Currency Facility and one for the Eastern Currency Facility. Currency paper is bought ahead of print schedules, which is why an October obligation covers December deliveries.

How the week compares

Government wide contract obligations in the October 2 to 8 window totaled about $1.49 billion in the USAspending feed. The Treasury total of $70.0 million ranks fourth among departments for the week, behind the Department of Veterans Affairs at $1,116,368,315.98, the Department of Agriculture at $105,356,483.76, and the General Services Administration at $77,689,561.03. Department of Defense contract data is largely absent from the feed for this period, a reporting gap flagged in the source data, so the ranking excludes meaningful Defense figures and should be read as a ranking of reported data only.

The contrast is the point of the profile. In the same week that Treasury contract buying totaled $70.0 million, the Treasury General Account recorded $301.4 billion of deposits and $299.7 billion of withdrawals in a single day, October 8. The department's own purchasing is a small line inside the cash operation it runs for the whole government.

Data vintage: USAspending contract transactions with action dates from October 2 to 8, 2026, pulled October 12, 2026. Daily Treasury Statement figures are for October 8, 2026.

Sources and methodology

Methodology. Daily cash figures are from the U.S. Treasury’s Daily Treasury Statement (DTS) for September 28, 2026, the government’s official daily cash-flow report. The DTS records money actually moving in and out of Treasury accounts; it is not the same as the budget deficit, which is measured monthly on an accrual-adjusted basis.
