About

Federal money, in plain English.

The Daily Ledger is a nonpartisan civic publisher. We explain U.S. federal spending and the national debt the way a good accountant explains a balance sheet: clearly, completely, and without telling you what to think about it.

Every article on this site starts from primary sources — the Treasury’s Daily Treasury Statement, Monthly Treasury Statement, and Debt to the Penny — and links back to them so you can check our work. If a number appears here, you can trace it to the government’s own books.

Our nonpartisan pledge

Deficits and debt are math, not ideology. We do not endorse candidates, parties, or policies. We do not frame numbers to favor one side. When we explain what the figures mean, we show our work and label our assumptions. If we ever get a number wrong, we will correct it publicly and promptly.

How we work

Primary sources only. We cite Treasury publications directly — not news coverage of them, not think-tank summaries. Each article names the dataset, the vintage (the exact date of the data), and links to the source.

Plain English. Fiscal writing is full of jargon that obscures more than it explains. We define every term the first time we use it.

Per-resident perspective. We report the national debt as debt per resident — about $117,000 as of September 2026 — because trillions are abstract and per-person figures are concrete. This is an arithmetic average for perspective, never a claim about what anyone owes.

No paywall, no ads. Everything we publish is free to read. We are building an audience and an email list first; any future revenue — sponsorships, partnerships — will be labeled clearly and will never influence what we publish.

Partner with us

We are building the most trusted plain-English source for federal finance data. If your organization reaches people who care about economic literacy — educators, employers, financial institutions, civic groups — we would like to talk about sponsorships, data partnerships, and custom explainers. Every partnership is disclosed to readers, in plain sight.
