The number moved again, and the streak has a new close

The number moved again overnight. Most people will never see it. Yesterday the Ledger closed at $40,444,342,709,389.15 on the October 22 close. Today the October 23 close reads $40,463,151,897,249.19, a one day rise of $18,809,187,860.04. That new close is the line in the Treasury release the headlines skipped: after holding through the weekend on the October 22 figure, the daily ritual has a fresh number, dated and labeled.

October is running faster than the longer average. From the September 30, 2026 fiscal year end close of $40,171,825,101,340.31, the debt rose by $291,326,795,909 in 23 days, an average of about $12,666,382,431 per day so far this month. Over the 64 days ending October 23 in the Ledger snapshot window starting August 20, the pace was about $6,717,111,101 per day, or about $77,744 per second, with debt per resident rising by about $19.59 per day. Deposits finished ahead, and the countdown runs underneath

The Daily Treasury Statement for October 23 recorded $47,164,000,000 in deposits and $26,434,000,000 in withdrawals, so deposits finished the day ahead by $20,730,000,000. Deposits are the cash coming into the Treasury General Account, mainly tax receipts and proceeds from selling Treasury securities. Withdrawals are the cash going out, mainly benefit payments, payroll, interest, and payments to contractors and states. A day when deposits top withdrawals can still be a day when the debt total rises, because the debt also moves with the timing of security settlements and redemptions.

The countdown underneath the daily move is simple subtraction: $536,848,102,751 stands between the October 23 total and 41 trillion dollars, about 80 days at the 64 day average pace of $6,717,111,101 per day, and fewer if the faster October pace holds. The next close, covering October 24 and the days that follow it in the Treasury release schedule, is the next number in the streak, and the Ledger will publish it in full as soon as the Treasury posts it. Tonight the next Brief carries that close.

Data vintage: Treasury Debt to the Penny and Daily Treasury Statement figures dated October 23, 2026, with the previous debt close dated October 22, 2026 and the fiscal year end close dated September 30, 2026, pulled October 27, 2026. The Ledger snapshot for this date reports deposit and withdrawal totals only, so no operating cash balance or line by line breakdown is published with this brief.

Sources and methodology

Methodology. Daily cash figures are from the U.S. Treasury’s Daily Treasury Statement (DTS) for September 28, 2026, the government’s official daily cash-flow report. The DTS records money actually moving in and out of Treasury accounts; it is not the same as the budget deficit, which is measured monthly on an accrual-adjusted basis.
