Key takeaways

  • The national debt stood at $40,329,229,827,541.02 on October 14, 2026, down $14,649,410,494.65 from the October 13 total of $40,343,879,238,035.67, for a total of 40.3 trillion dollars.
  • Debt per resident, dividing the total by the Census population figure of 342,875,301, comes to $117,621.
  • The Daily Treasury Statement for October 14 recorded $17,536,000,000 in deposits and $51,928,000,000 in withdrawals, a net outflow of $34,392,000,000 from the Treasury General Account.

The debt number

The total public debt outstanding on October 14 was $40,329,229,827,541.02, a decrease of $14,649,410,494.65 from the October 13 total of $40,343,879,238,035.67. One day decreases are a normal part of this series. The total counts Treasury securities outstanding, and redemptions of maturing securities can exceed new issues on a given day even while the longer trend points up.

The longer trend still points up. Over the 64 days ending October 14, the debt grew by $387,299,995,470. That is an average pace of about $6,051,562,429 per day, or about $70,041 per second. At that average pace, debt per resident rises by about $17.65 per day. The debt closed fiscal 2026 on September 30 at $40,171,825,101,340.31, so the October 14 total stands $157,404,726,201 above that close, fourteen days into fiscal 2027. Debt per resident is a measure of scale only. It divides the total debt by the resident population so the size of the total can be compared across years.

The daily cash picture

The Daily Treasury Statement for October 14 recorded $17,536,000,000 in deposits and $51,928,000,000 in withdrawals. Deposits are the cash coming into the Treasury General Account, mainly tax receipts and proceeds from selling Treasury securities. Withdrawals are the cash going out, mainly benefit payments, payroll, interest, and payments to contractors and states. On October 14, withdrawals exceeded deposits by $34,392,000,000.

A single day with withdrawals ahead of deposits does not by itself drive the debt total. The debt total changes when securities are issued or redeemed, which follows the auction and maturity calendar rather than the daily cash balance. The cash statement and the debt statement answer two different questions: how much cash moved today, and how much the government has borrowed in total.

Sources and methodology

Methodology. Daily cash figures are from the U.S. Treasury’s Daily Treasury Statement (DTS) for September 28, 2026, the government’s official daily cash-flow report. The DTS records money actually moving in and out of Treasury accounts; it is not the same as the budget deficit, which is measured monthly on an accrual-adjusted basis.
